SVdP Appeal Letter due to Pandemic Crisis

Picture
Dear Parishioners,

As you may know, Nativity Parish has a very active St Vincent de Paul Society. We regularly deliver food to many low income families in our parish, primarily in the parts of East Palo Alto on this side of 101. With the current lock-down situation, many of those families have lost their jobs and in some cases, they have taken on responsibility for even more family members who have lost their homes or jobs.

On a recent Saturday, our volunteers visited 17 families, delivering several bags of food to each of those in need.  We also provide help with rent and utility payments when the need is great.

Our financial support comes entirely from Nativity’s generous and supportive parishioners and in March, there was no Fifth Sunday collection due to the shut-down.  Once again, there will be none at the end of May either.

Therefore, at this time, we are taking the unusual step of asking you to send in or drop off at the Rectory office, a check made out to “Saint Vincent de Paul Society.”  With your generous help, we can continue to help the families in our parish who are most affected by this historic crisis.  We thank you in advance for all of your generosity and continued support of this much-needed contribution.

Warm Regards,
Mike Wilmer
President, Nativity SVdP

Nativity Conference of the

St. Vincent de Paul Society

The Saint Vincent de Paul Society (SVdP) is an international Catholic organization devoted to caring for the poor that was founded in Paris in 1833 by Frederick Ozanam.  The society has conferences in the parishes of many Catholic parishes throughout the United States.

Nativity’s conference was founded in 1964 and since then has been providing food, clothing and rental assistance to the poor of the parish.

People in need are able to call our help line (650-321-7424) and request assistance as often as once a month.  Our volunteers respond to these calls by delivering food and grocery cards and by assessing rental or utility requests on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings.  We provide this service to all needy clients regardless of race, religion or other factors.  Our only requirement is that the need is real and that the people we help live within the parish boundaries.  We currently help 10 to 15 individuals and families a week.  Clothing vouchers, rental and utility payment assistance are provided with the help of the San Mateo SVdP council which is our parent organization. We have about twenty-five members, and are always welcoming to new volunteers.

Our funding comes from “Fifth Sunday brown bag” collections after Nativity Masses in the months in which there is a fifth Sunday (four times a year.)  Our conference meets on the fourth Monday of each month at 8:15 AM in the rectory parlor; please consider joining us.

Please be generous when you see us collecting after Mass.
